Heidi Van Lier gives her response to the question: I'm in high school, What should I be doing right now? She answered with twelve tips for being a successful film student who is on the road to becoming an independent filmmaker. Her twelve tips were condensed into one to three word phrases: Research, make films, write stuff, post stuff, panels, collect your contacts, practice, prehab, (opposed to re-hab) watch, support, educate, socialize, rinse and repeat. Her major emphasis was on starting to develop these skills early while the kids are in high school. It is important to get the word out about what you're doing and making, as well as networking with other people who are doing the same thing as you. The more contacts and connections the more known you will become thus you have a greater chance of making it big and learning as much as possible.
